by G.F Round
The most complete treatment of turbomachines for the engineer ever written.
The primary purpose of this book is to provide an integrated overview of incompressible flow turbomachines and their design, in this case pumps and turbines. Theory and empirical knowledge of turbomachines are brought together in detail to form a framework for a basic understanding of this complex subject. A step-by-step approach is used by means of solved problems at the end of each chapter to accomplish this.
•Presents a clear overview of incompressible flow turbomachines
•Treats both types of turbomachines in one text
•Includes a large number of illustative solved problems
This volume contains a wide-ranging cross-section of the papers presented at the BAIL 2008 conference, which was held from 28 July to 1 August 2008 at the University of Limerick, Ireland. The BAIL conferences are aimed equally at mathematicians (pure and applied) and engineers who share a common interest in the solution of problems that produce layer phenomena. Thus this book gives an excellent overview of current research into many engineering and mathematical problems of a singularly perturbed character.

PREFACE
Two books covering the field of modern optics have been prepared in
this series “Methods of Experimental Physics”, separating the material into
two parts, one with the title “Geometrical and Instrumental Optics”, and
the other with the title “Physical Optics and Light Measurements”.
The purpose of these books is to help the scientist or engineer who is
not a specialist in optics to understand the main principles involved in
optical instrumentation and experimental optics.
Our main intent is to provide the reader with some of the interdisciplinary
understanding that is so essential in modern instrument design, development,
and manufacture. Coherent optical processing and holography are
also considered, since they play a very important role in contemporary
optical instrumentation. Radiometry, detectors, and charge coupled imaging
devices are also described in these volumes, because of their great practical
importance in modern optics. Basic and theoretical optics, like laser physics,
nonlinear optics and spectroscopy are not described, however, because they
are not normally considered relevant to optical instrumentation.
In this volume, “Physical Optics and Light Measurements”, Chapter One
describes the theory and applications of interference and interferometers.
Chapter Two studies diffraction, its basic theoretical fundamentals, and
some practical applications. Polarized light and its uses are considered in
Chapter Three. Holography and holographic methods are studied in detail
in Chapter Four. The photometric and radiometric principles are covered
in Chapter Five. Finally, Chapter Six considers detectors.
There might be some overlapping of topics covered in different chapters,
but this is desirable, since the points of view of different authors, treating
different subjects, may be quite instructive and useful for a better understanding
of the material.
This book has been the result of the efforts of many people. Professor
H. W. Palmer started this project and spent many fruitful hours on it.
Unfortunately, he did not have the time to finish his editorial work due to
previous important commitments. I would like to express my great appreciation
of and thanks to Professor Palmer and all of the authors, without
whom this book could never have been finished. I also thank Dr. R. E.
Hopkins and many friends and colleagues for their help and encouragement.
Finally, I appreciate the great understanding of my family, mainly my wife
Isabel, for the many hours taken away from them during the preparation
of these books.
This volume is devoted to the Persistent Scatterer Technique, the latest development in radar interferometric data processing. Using this technique, millimetric displacements can be observed at hundreds of thousands of targets that are affected only slightly from temporal and geometric decorrelation, such as the walls and the roofs of houses, lamp posts, grates, window ledges, etc. All acquired data can be used by this technique, which enables the analysis of displacements since 1992 in any area world-wide, using the archived historical data of the ERS-1 and ERS-2 satellites. Data of other current and future sensors can also be processed using this technique. The original PS algorithm is revisited based on the main literature, and possible weak points are identified. The STUN (spatio-temporal unwrapping network) algorithm, developed to cope with these issues in a robust way, is presented and applied to two test sites. For the Berlin area, two data stacks of adjacent tracks are analyzed to assess the quality description provided by the STUN algorithm. For the Las Vegas test site, a combination of ERS and ENVISAT data is performed to estimate significant linear and seasonal displacements.
Choice Outstanding Academic Title, 2008.

The uniqueness of shape as a perceptual property lies in the fact that it is both complex and structured. Shapes are perceived veridically—perceived as they really are in the physical world, regardless of the orientation from which they are viewed. The constancy of the shape percept is the sine qua non of shape perception; you are not actually studying shape if constancy cannot be achieved with the stimulus you are using. Shape is the only perceptual attribute of an object that allows unambiguous identification. In this first book devoted exclusively to the perception of shape by humans and machines, Zygmunt Pizlo describes how we perceive shapes and how to design machines that can see shapes as we do. He reviews the long history of the subject, allowing the reader to understand why it has taken so long to understand shape perception, and offers a new theory of shape.

Until recently, shape was treated in combination with such other perceptual properties as depth, motion, speed, and color. This resulted in apparently contradictory findings, which made a coherent theoretical treatment of shape impossible. Pizlo argues that once shape is understood to be unique among visual attributes and the perceptual mechanisms underlying shape are seen to be different from other perceptual mechanisms, the research on shape becomes coherent and experimental findings no longer seem to contradict each other. A single theory of shape perception is thus possible, and Pizlo offers a theoretical treatment that explains how a three-dimensional shape percept is produced from a two-dimensional retinal image, assuming only that the image has been organized into two-dimensional shapes.

Pizlo focuses on discussion of the main concepts, telling the story of shape without interruption. Appendixes provide the basic mathematical and computational information necessary for a technical understanding of the argument. References point the way to more in-depth reading in geometry and computational vision.

Summary:Certain data-communication protocols hog the spotlight, but all of them have a lot in common. Computer Networking: A Top-Down Approach Featuring the Internet explains the engineering problems that are inherent in communicating digital information from point to point. The top-down approach mentioned in the subtitle means that the book starts at the top of the protocol stack--at the application layer--and works its way down through the other layers, until it reaches bare wire.
The authors, for the most part, shun the well-known seven-layer Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) protocol stack in favor of their own five-layer (application, transport, network, link, and physical) model. It's an effective approach that helps clear away some of the hand waving traditionally associated with the more obtuse layers in the OSI model. The approach is definitely theoretical--don't look here for instructions on configuring Windows 2000 or a Cisco router--but it's relevant to reality, and should help anyone who needs to understand networking as a programmer, system architect, or even administration guru.
The treatment of the network layer, at which routing takes place, is typical of the overall style. In discussing routing, authors James Kurose and Keith Ross explain (by way of lots of clear, definition-packed text) what routing protocols need to do: find the best route to a destination. Then they present the mathematics that determine the best path, show some code that implements those algorithms, and illustrate the logic by using excellent conceptual diagrams. Real-life implementations of the algorithms--including Internet Protocol (both IPv4 and IPv6) and several popular IP routing protocols--help you to make the transition from pure theory to networking technologies. --David Wall
Topics covered: The theory behind data networks, with thorough discussion of the problems that are posed at each level (the application layer gets plenty of attention). For each layer, there's academic coverage of networking problems and solutions, followed by discussion of real technologies. Special sections deal with network security and transmission of digital multimedia.
