My aim in writing this short book has been to introduce the average student, with no more than an elementary knowledge of physicsmathematics, to the thermal properties of metals, insulators and semiconductors. The reader is most likety to encounter practical problems that are associated with the flow of heat and for this reason, particularly in the first chapter on experimental techniques, I have laid greater emphasis on thermal conductivity than on thermal capacity and expansion. A brief outline of the background solid-state theory in Chapter 2 is followed in the next two chapters by the discussion of the thermal properties of the crystal lattice and of the electrons in metals. In the last chapter, the treatment of the thermoelectric effects in semiconductors leads on naturally to discussion of the very interesting bipolar heat conduction effect and of the bipolar thermomagnetic effects that are just beginning to find practical application. Finally, I mention the fascinating phenomenon of phonon-drag that will surely provide a fruitful field for future research.
