This book outlines a mathematical way of thinking about the interaction of 'pure' and 'applied' computer science. I will be more subjective than is customary in science and mathematics exposition and sketch my personal vision, in terms of my own experience in pure and applied mathematics and my extensive readings in the scholarly computer science literature. Unfortunately, I have not been able to bring the ideas I sketch here to the state of completion that I might wish. I am offering them in this incomplete form because I believe that they will be useful to mathematically-minded scientists and engineers who want to understand how the computing science insights fit into the overall mathematical structure of their discipline and to mathematicians who wont to think about computing science with the same intellectual tools that have been utilized to great mutual benefit in the mathematization of traditional, differential-equations based science and engineering.
